Is HR Ruining Your Company's Reputation?

A letter to business owners and leaders

Dear business owners and leaders,

Do you know what is your HR up to? Do you know how bad or good they are? Who is supervising HR? Is HR running your company to the ground? Are they ruining your company's reputation? Why are they struggling? Let's talk!

You must pay attention to the chatter about HR, right? It is not great for employees but it’s worst for businesses. This week I asked a business leader “Do you actually know what is your HR up to?” Of course not! How would anybody would know when nobody is measuring their performance every step of the way. And no, I am not talking about traditional HR KPIs. I am talking about behavior and value.

Stories that I hear are shocking and I don’t think business leaders are aware of how bad their HR people are and how they are ruining their company’s reputation. Here are a few examples:

  • Posting ghost jobs. How unethical! We know why you are doing it, so just stop!

  • Ghosting candidates especially the ones you have put through rounds of interviews.

  • Asking inappropriate interview questions, being late for the interview, opening people’s CV for the first time during the interview, being arrogant, and asking people to present their last pay slip as a proof of their current salary. Not to mention the question in the application form “Are you currently pregnant?” while bragging about their DEI and women empowerment agenda.

  • Showing up on the first day for work and people don’t have even a desk to sit at, their work equipments, or a detailed training plan.

  • When people ask about why their salaries are deducted requesting a breakdown and HR says “We know what we do and it is correct.”

  • When HR is committing crime by going against the labour law.

  • When HR cannot follow their own policies and procedures. Every employment tribunal is lost because HR made a mistake not because of what happened.

  • When employees ask to have an exit interview and HR says “We don’t collect negative ones.” Or, when HR hides/destroys the bad ones.

  • When HR is screaming at the employee.

  • When HR puts an inexperienced people to interview an experienced one with no knowledge about the job.

  • When the final settlement/last salary is held back for no reason really.

  • When HR threatens the employee with deportation, firing, or say “I will guarantee that you will never have a job ever again.”

  • When HR refuses to provide a reference letter confirming that the person worked there.

  • When HR tells employees that they must bring water for the meeting because it is not provided during meetings.

  • When HR keeps employees’ passports and holds power over employees.

I could go on but you get the gist right?

So, business owners and leaders, do you know what you HR is up to?

How would you when you don’t have the tools to supervise, manage, and measure their performance. HR can literally get away with murder, ruin your reputation, block talent coming in, ruin employee morale and you would be desperately looking for solution while the problem is right in front of you.

But you hire your friend, a person who is nice, someone with decades of experience but with the wrong experience, a person who has never seen HR and now she/he is the CHRO (and we all wonder what’s happened there), or someone who is cheap. Well, just so you know, these are the things they are up to and it is costing you and your business dearly.

You also fire good HR people who are bringing problems to your attention, want to address employee challenges, want to stop illegal and unethical behaviors, or the one who wants to fire the manager who is sexually harassing a colleague but that manager happened to be your friend so instead, you fire the HR person. Problem solved.

Good HR people are struggling and here is why. In this video I elaborate more on why business leaders are blindsided by their HR and how they can supervise and help them. I also talk about why HR is struggling and the solution. Enjoy!
